Ten days before his semi-final at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), Austria’s representative JJ completed his first rehearsal in Basel on Monday. “I can’t even put my feelings into words,” said the 24-year-old.

Johannes Pietsch (born April 29, 2001, in Vienna), stage name JJ, is an Austrian-Filipino singer and countertenor. He will represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel.

It was his premiere on the ESC stage, and “Wasted Love” was performed three times. “We’ve been working towards this moment for months—we’ve developed, prepared, and rehearsed everything. Standing on this stage now is indescribable for me,” said JJ in a broadcast by ORF on Tuesday. And what can you see on stage? “Just like in the video, the sea and the rough seas also play an important role in our stage show. We make use of all the possibilities to create a very intimate moment on the one hand and to bring a big and dramatic show to the stage on the other,” explained our ESC hopeful, who said with a wink, ”Because that is one of the most critical questions at the ESC: Yes, there is a wind machine.”

A Finnish designer created JJ’s stage outfit before the ESC.
In the staging, for which Creative Director Sergio Jaen and his creative team are responsible, a boat of memorabilia is caught in a storm. The staging was designed to broadcast the performance in black and white. The stage outfit was created by Finnish designer Teemu Muurimäki: “A stormy black ocean inspires the look. JJ’s water-shiny, oversized long coat, wide pants, and top are made of a high-gloss mixed fabric and wool denim. The cuts and collar lines are highlighted with steel metal eyelet details.” The second rehearsal will follow for JJ on May 8.
